The Truth about Markets

Het boek The Truth about Markets (2003) van John Kay is tamelijk geweldig voor wie zich afvraagt hoe economieën eigenlijk echt werken.

Op heldere wijze legt Kay uit waarom vrije-markteconomieën een pak efficiënter blijken dan planeconomieën. Even duidelijk is zijn betoog dat ongebreideld kapitalisme evenmin zaligmakend is. De auteur hamert op het belang van pluralisme, tegen ‘the single voice’ in. Kay spreekt met gezag, maar schuwt de (zelf)spot niet.

Op pagina 337 kwam ik de volgende passage tegen – één van de vele gewiekste paragrafen uit het boek:

The assumptions of the American business model (ABM) are false, but that does not imply their opposite is true. There are people who think economic behaviour is mostly altruistic, political mechanisms of allocations are always preferable to the anarchy of the market, government should control and preferably own all productive assets, and highly progressive taxation should be imposed to bring about an egalitarian distribution of income and wealth. Such people are, however, in a minority, and I doubt if many of them will have read this far.

Een andere leuk zinnetje komen we tegen op pagina 351:

It is not true that profit is the purpose of a market economy, and the production of goods and services is a means to it: the purpose is the production of goods and services, profit the means.

Zelfs al zijn heel wat feiten uit het boek ondertussen reeds ouwe koek, het geheel blijft een bijzonder relevant, actueel en prikkelend werk voor wie zich nog niet vastgereden heeft in een of ander groot gelijk. Of zoals Kay het in zijn allerlaatste zin zelf verwoordt:

This book is dedicated to those for whom a partial understanding of complex reality is better than the reassurance of false universal explanations.
